The Internets: A New Form of Antipathy

The power of the Internet as a medium of communication is quite aptly demonstrated by the recent Myanmar riots, resulting in the (as of now) stoppage of access (see here for a recap of events). I can only hope for the safety of the Myanmar people. But I digress.

It seems that there is a general consensus that the Internet holds the key to true democracy, one which active participation is expected from the citizenry. To a certain extent, this is true (see an example here), and one can expect this to be a growing trend.

However, I fear that it breeds a new form of antipathy, one whereby people mistakenly associate sociopolitical blogging as true activism. After all, the blogosphere can raise the awareness of the people, but what then? Be it a social evolution or revolution, a collective action must be taken. And I am not sure if the bloggers, at least in Singapore anyway, have the courage or effort to stand up and be counted.

Anyway, I hope to be mistaken. And it would be interesting to see the outcome of the application below:
